I grant it's a tangent, but I take issue with this excerpt; "Gladwell is unequipped to supply ... context that could meaningfully explain why the American government would force an unconditional surrender when the possibility of negotiation remained totally live."

This idead, that the US could or should have negotiated a conditional surrender with Japan, is one that crops up now and then, and it's one I find uncomfortable.
