Thoughts on the drive home from #SMH2021: our panel (organized by @ProfPaul_J ) was the only panel on any pre-modern topic. There were just two other papers in the whole program before 1700.
And I can't help but think there is real value in getting more premodernists there. 1/9

I think this was a function of the even heavier than normal PME/DOD presence, which tends to skew toward modern topics. Even 19th century stuff is kind of archaic in that world.

I personally always like having premodernists around, because following C A Bayly, one of the central conceits of modernity is that a vast gulf separates us from the “pre modern” past, and it’s useful to question that frequently unexamined assumption (as you do in this thread).
