Of course, when Plato came up with the concept of the philosopher monarch, Athens was a democracy and a thriving Aegean power. In 88 BC, a philosopher monarch ruled Athens named Ariston, who declared war on Rome and got the city smashed to bits.
Clearly Ariston wasn't chosen by the Lord, QED. But of course the 'good king' is always the standard defense for monarchy, despite 'good kings' being in so vanishingly short supply.

At some point in your Paradox series you should mention the really disturbing amount of actual, non-ironic monarchists in the fanbase. Not 'play monarchies for more options'- huge amounts of those fans, no judgement- but full on dark enlightenment types.
