The idea here is to prime the students with a conceptual outline (which I talk through at the opening of every lecture, "today we're going to talk about..." style; it's not just up there, I talk it) so they can follow where we are and where we are going.

I see we cross-tweeted. :) They might benefit from more repetition of this idea, too; the more new and alien the mode of engagement is, the more effort it takes to shake people out of it. But this also might just not help your problem any more than it already has.

I now make the outline available as word document ahead of time (not on slide). That helps. Also, the overlap between text and lecture I now see as a a plus. Those who "missed " a detail can go to textbook.
