The idea here is to prime the students with a conceptual outline (which I talk through at the opening of every lecture, "today we're going to talk about..." style; it's not just up there, I talk it) so they can follow where we are and where we are going.

I have waffled between color-schemes over the years and settled on this blue-and-white because it seems to be the most visible in a variety of lighting conditions.

Mine tend to look similar (though I end up with a lot of equations while working example problems), but i have a title either at the top or the bottom. It eats up a little screen-space, but it makes it easier for students to keep track of where we are in the lesson.pic.twitter.com/qVZTsSzFaK

They look fine, tbh, but I would provide a citation for a good general discussion of the art and the contexts. Beyond that, I don't see what your students would be complaining about based on those slides.

I will say, I haven't encountered the complaints you had in your evals, but I do prepare my slides as if I was giving a conference presentation (including full biblio that I post in the LMS afterwards). This may be what they're looking for.
