So when I zoom-lecture, my first slide in every lecture's powerpoint is an outline of the lecture (in bullet points), along with a list of key terms, ideas, people and dates. I encourage students that they should get in the habit of writing that all in their notes first.

What exactly do your Power-Points look like?

hi! not a teacher at all here, but a student with ADHD that did a bachelor's in psychology. Of course I don't know your students specifically, but for me, I have a really hard time taking notes in detail if I don't have a "structure" 1/?
-
I think this outline you're referencing that isn't visible on zoom could help in a lot of options - maybe it would help to have this accessible to everyone during the lecture via google doc? Typically images don't help me process or remember things, but- 2/?

I have, but I also wonder if this falls under the principle that when teaching, no matter what you do, at least one student will find a way to complain about it

I am not an experienced teacher, but some students have a model of education where everything just gets memorized. It's just a database of facts in their brain, to be filled and emptied through classes. Unfortunately, that model can be *almost* successful, *most* of the time.
-
And if that's the model... well, some of them get quite good at optimizing for it.

It might be worth making some of this explicit on the first day. Students come to college with beliefs about how they're "supposed" to engage with a class, and it can be hard for them to realize that a course is designed for a different (even if better) mode of engagement.
-
This I do! I have a bullet in my first lecture right near the beginning where I talk about what the outline slide is for and how they should use it (and the 'syllabus day' lecture gets an outline so that I can be showing them what it is with one on screen).

This is what my students seem to want and they have a tendency I'm constantly trying to break to want to copy the whole text rather then listen to what I'm emphasizing
