I know I set up classes that way when I was starting out, because it was easy and I didn't know what I was doing. I also know that my teaching mentors pushed me to get away from that approach because it doesn't actually teach students to really absorb the information.
They just copy it down, which isn't the same. I worry students are getting used to an approach where they ignore the spoken words and write down the powerpoints which will equip them poorly for a world where key information is delivered in dialogue that they need to process.
Anyway - other teacher-friends, have you encountered this sort of request too? What is your approach for the amount of text on powerpoints and what text you put there?
Lectures were always torture for me as a student, as they were either slowly reading off overly detailed ppts, or depending on me hearing every word without being able to fully discern each word since I could not always fully see their face.
As an instructor now, I make my ppts with what could be considered headings, and specific names or examples of a particular idea I am trying to demonstrate. Students usually write those down, then listen to me to elaborate their notes beyond just those headings.
Spending most of your day listening to a lecturer doesn't work for everyone. Very different from just getting some information verbally, let alone in a real dialog. Since leaving school I have only had one situation that felt like school (corporate offsite) and it was misery.
I'm a student with auditory processing issues. Classes where the teachers don't write stuff down are very difficult for me. I spend most of my time in class confused and then have to spend double the time I usually would reading the textbook and supplemental materials.
It's definitely not a position all students are in but, for students with learning differences writing on a board or ppt can be really helpful.
In my experience, this is exactly why students want text slides with all of the key points. That way, they don’t have to *think* about what you’re saying but still get what they need to study. I always refused these requests and instead, as you have, discussed note taking.
