Writing this, I found myself wondering what the opposite of damning with faint praise is? I feel like I was 'Praising with faint damnation' - the treatment of non-western people, places & history is generally *so poor* in the gaming space that while I have real issues...
...with Paradox's approach - and I spend most of my time talking about those issues - the game is still much better than the dismal average in these sorts of things.
I think the modern depiction of caucasian facial features (sans beard) of Akbar is inspired from this movie https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0449994/ … from 2008. However, in a 1960s popular Indian movie called mughal-e-azam the depiction is more 'accurate'.
the trade system feels like a textbook illustration of the difference between "predictive" and "causal" explanations i.e. it's a system of mechanics designed to (accurately-ish) yield a certain set of outcomes, but one which doesn't represent the true underlying mechanics

Right? I wrote that sentence and then honestly spent a few minutes just pondering it. The good news is, I think, at the rate the developing world is developing, with some luck we may live long enough to find out.

Interestingly, Stellaris directly represents slavery and worse (e.g. turning conquered species into livestock) as something affecting people, although the true horror is still abstracted. I wonder if that's because it's not real history, so fewer moral hazards exist.
