In that context, it's really striking to me how often the reevaluation of these ancient, medieval or early modern figures happens in the shadows of the 'conquerors' of the post-industrial period.
We can't help but ask why we hate Hitler, Stalin, Saddam Hussein, Idi Amin and other such men who cast themselves in that same role - we can't help but ask why we hate them and yet aren't suppose to hate Alexander or Napoleon or Frederick der Grosse or Caesar.

And slowly coming to the correct conclusion that if there was a Caesar or an Alexander or a Napoleon today, we ought to hate them too.
