This week on the blog, our analysis of @PDX_Dev_Studio 's @E_Universalis and the theory of history it presents continues!
This time, we're looking at how EU4 portrays war and diplomacy and esp. how it serves as a surprisingly good IR-realism simulator:https://acoup.blog/2021/05/07/collections-teaching-paradox-europa-universalis-iv-part-ii-red-queens/ …

I appreciate the point that- from a realist standpoint- hegemony and international law are slightly more intertwined than the modern liberal worldview tends to think. Of course that concept (and others you have covered) remains relevant in the contemporary US-led world order...

That’s probably not a coincidence, as EU4 is a product of its own time like any other form of history. That said, I get that contemporary geopolitics are outside the scope of this series. Although that doesn’t seem to stop you from getting in a mandatory swipe at China each post.

We're going to hit a Great Transition in the logic of realism when we talk about Victoria II. Industrialization changes everything. Contemporary politics may make somewhat more sense in a realist lens then.

Ok, looking forward to it. Random question, but did you study under Prof. Talbert? His course on the late Roman Republic is still very memorable to me, almost ten years later.

Yes! Richard was my - as the Germans say - Doktorvater (or dissertation advisor if we must use the rather more bland English phrasing). Fantastic teacher, if I am ever half the lecturer he is (well, was, he is now happily retired), I will be well pleased.
