So, to be fair to wikipedia, Andronikos, Markle and Matthews reconstruct this way. And certainly it's possible - but I wonder about how common because it's not in any of the artwork.
I can't help but feel like if the metal tube was standard we ought to see it on the Alexander Mosaic, which is pretty gear-accurate and shows the middle parts of sarisa shafts. But they just aren't there.
