Fair, though I think it is possible for something to be unnecessary and still beautiful. I really like the Silmarillion - it leaves some questions unanswered, but learning that the seemingly perfect elves of LotR were the product of long, self-inflicted suffering adds a lot.

I was thinking about this lately, how I am sure Tolkien didn't intend this, but the Silmarillion feels really relevant when we too live in an impossibly advanced, almost magical society that is nevertheless also founded on tremendous amounts of suffering.

Like the elves, we have bought our (anti-colonial, anti-racist, egalitarian) wisdom - in whatever small quantities we have it - by such a terrible cost. Our Lothlorien, like Galadriel's, has more than one kinslaying under the roots of its trees.
