I was thinking about this lately, how I am sure Tolkien didn't intend this, but the Silmarillion feels really relevant when we too live in an impossibly advanced, almost magical society that is nevertheless also founded on tremendous amounts of suffering.

Like the elves, we have bought our (anti-colonial, anti-racist, egalitarian) wisdom - in whatever small quantities we have it - by such a terrible cost. Our Lothlorien, like Galadriel's, has more than one kinslaying under the roots of its trees.

I don't even think of the Silmarillion as a prequel. It's a collection of stories that could have stood on their own if their author finished and published them.
