The U.S. pays about $20 for each dose of the mRNA vaccines (we paid more than the EU to get them faster). For the cost of one aircraft carrier, at that higher rate (which, again, we paid for speed), we could fully vaccine more than 300,000,000 people.
Other countries have paid much less, which suggests to me that the price is going to come down. J&J is cheaper already, just $10 per person, so that same money would vaccinate 1.2 billion people. With a B.
Ask yourself - what is going to have more value in the long run? One more carrier - or American vaccines coming in star-spangled boxes to vaccinate almost the entire population of the *continent* of Africa?
I think there must literally be nothing more important we could be doing to make America safer and more prosperous (because a sick world makes bad customers!) than this.
Seems like you're using 6 billion for a carrier-- a new Ford class is about $13 billion a pop, and operating costs are 391m a year. Assume three decades of use and that's 1.2 billion doses even at the higher rate.
