To be clear, some departments at UNC froze graduate student admissions to cover budget shortfalls and the university has been on an informal hiring freeze for a year.
But evidently they have money for a mega-e-sports home-base with bespoke lighting. 
As a reminder, these sorts of funding decisions are made by the UNC Board of Governors, who are selected by the state legislature. Don't blame professors, don't blame students, don't blame staff. Blame the board of governors who OK'd this sort of nonsense.
I assume this money came from the housing budget, which afaik is self sustaining and a separate pot of money from academics? (at least that's what I hope)
Money is fungible though! Which is why a funding crisis that mostly was a product of students not being on campus to pay fees resulted in hiring freezes of faculty on instructional budgets!
The luxury-resort plus homework model of university is just awful. It's done to attract wealthy, lazy students, but sucks up the money those students bring in anyway. The only ppl with the time to extensively use the various attractions are ones squandering their time.
I don't want to come off as excusing UNC's corrupt, racist leadership... but is there any chance that UNC is pivoting to esports as another potential revenue stream? How much do they spend on football and basketball facilities?
