To be clear, some departments at UNC froze graduate student admissions to cover budget shortfalls and the university has been on an informal hiring freeze for a year.
But evidently they have money for a mega-e-sports home-base with bespoke lighting. 
As a reminder, these sorts of funding decisions are made by the UNC Board of Governors, who are selected by the state legislature. Don't blame professors, don't blame students, don't blame staff. Blame the board of governors who OK'd this sort of nonsense.
American higher ed has little to do with teaching. I know I said that yesterday(?), but I stand by it. The system is broken and there is no way to fix it without completely burning it down and rebuilding at this point.
You don't need to completely burn it down. You just need to replace the administrative bureaucracies entirely. Faculty, by and large, are doing fine in their diligence.

To be fair, I have exactly the same attitude towards all of UNC's absurdly over-priced sports facilities.
A giant distraction machine adding on to the smaller distraction machines in their dorms and the even smaller distraction machines in their pockets. Can the university say "no" to things that actively harm education?
I enjoy gaming and I enjoyed gaming during my own undergrad, but I can't but agree that this is a silly amenity for the university to offer, especially at the level of glitz and expense.
I'm not necessarily bothered by the computers and consoles, I think opening up esports to academic study is cool - but wow those lights must've cost a fortune
I do agree though that this generally isn't a good look, especially if the university is not prioritizing the *academics* it already has
