And of course the New Testament is set during the period of the Roman Empire. So don't say 'Biblical times,' say 'Iron Age Levant' if you mean the most of the Old Testament, say 'Hellenistic Period' if you mean Maccabees and 'Roman period' if you mean the New Testament.

I think the distinction must be made that the bible itself has no relevant recollection of the bronze age or the bronze age collapse, so anything there that would be contemporary to these times is definitelly a later literary construction.

It's really interesting because, if memory serves, I believe the Romans were notorious for taking lots of prisoners and enslaving them. Which, from the descriptions, seemed to be really bad. Plus I seen that Russell Crowe movie.
Indeed! Being conquered and forced into slavery by the Romans was very bad! They were often brutal, enslaved people had no rights and suffered complete social death. And that was pretty much the norm for Mediterranean slavery. It was, and I must stress this again, very bad!
There's a common claim on the Intertubes (especially reddit) that Achaemenid Empire abolished slavery. Am I correct that this is a misconception ? Or does it have some historical basis behind it?
To my knowledge - and I am not an Achaemenid specialist - it's a wild over-reading. Slavery may have been somewhat less common under the Achaemenids, but it certainly wasn't banned and we have plenty of evidence not only of provincials but also Persians enslaving people.
Old Testament slavery regulations are mostly regarding debt slavery of fellow citizens, which was only meant to be temporary, and in a lot of ways were meant to provide limits on how bad slavery could be, in contrast to providing justification for exploitative chattel slavery.
Not all slavery is equally bad, but all slavery is bad. And it's not a good look if you reserve your society's nicer forms of slavery to people of your faith/nationality.
