Also is it let go of your adjuncts, or hire a bunch more that collectively cost less than even a single faculty line?
Presumably you fire all of the adjuncts first, then hire new, even more poorly paid adjuncts once you realize that courses do in fact need teachers.

I definitely saw stories of schools that mass-fired most of their adjuncts at the first sign of a downturn.

Hold on, colleges and universities are meant to teach courses? This goes in the face of almost everything administrators say and signal. I think you might be wrong on this, Brett, colleges and unis are for socializing and earning big salaries for a few people at the top.
