I did a stint in retail when I was younger and the shifting hours were the worst. Made it impossible to schedule anything or plan at all. It was explained to me as a consequence of computers coming up with the schedules, but it was awful and I don't get why they do it that way.

First-bite theory: retail hours are just not amenable to the regular patterns of life, so if stores just said "we're hiring somebody to work all nights and weekends" they wouldn't fill the position. A "flexible" schedule spreads the suffering across the whole work force
