Venice world domination is very fun. I highly recommend it. You have to do this insane balancing act for almost the entire game. Have to cripple Ottos as early as possible, then break Mamluks and move on India and East Africa. That, and/or conquer the Mediterranean.
I had this amazing Venice -> Italy run a while back in which the climactic moment was winning a personal union over Russia with a king whose name was, I shit you not, Napoleone (plan was to transition back into a revolutionary republic, but I never did have the time to finish).
