Timeline as I remember it: between 2nd and 3rd periods (say, 8:50 CST) I heard the news from a kid nobody believed because he lied all the time. It was probably confirmed during 3rd period but it wasn't until 4th (about 10am) that the TV came out. So the main action was over
We tuned in while the towers were still up and on fire. In my mind I recall that we saw the second plane hit live, but I am not sure that is right; memory is fickle. I do know a classmate expressed confidence the towers would stay up because they had resisted the '93 bombing.

I, by contrast, had never heard of the World Trade Center before that day

Looking back on it, the information environment at my high school was odd. The level of news and current event awareness was really high, presumably because lots of our classmates were the kids of government officials.
