Though, if I may, I have found that building my own public-facing platform (read: a blog) really helped me feel less isolated and less frightened of life outside of the standard academic career path, because it connected with people eager to hear what I could say.
Maybe it is time to find a way to take some of your learning and research in classics directly to the people, while you wait for that spot on the academic ladder to open up?
