You have to think a few exceptional examples make vanguardism seem like a viable strategy for the powerless. In practice it probably just mainly leads to weirdos taking their niche politics too seriously.
I mean, really it just requires accepting the propaganda of certain, generally leftist, regimes entirely uncritically, never once questioning the degree to which they were a vanguard or that their regime helped 'the people.' So no surprise it is so widespread a way of thought.
