Great thread but I believe this early number was not representative per @AlexHortonTX reporting. That number declined as more were charged. (But again, excellent thread).

Correct. The numbers regressed toward the mean as more people were charged, and male vets were slightly underrepresented among the adult men therehttps://www.washingtonpost.com/national-security/veterans-extremism-capitol-attack/2021/04/19/3597018a-9651-11eb-8e42-3906c09073f9_story.html …

44/380 is 11.5%, which is still nearly double the 6% of veterans in general society. We'll have to wait to see the severity of the issues the people had, but it has also been my sense that rioter-veterans tended to have some of the most concerning fact patterns (e.g. zip-ties).

This from GWU is why I think looking at the men is picking apples from apples https://extremism.gwu.edu/sites/g/files/zaxdzs2191/f/This_is_War.pdf …pic.twitter.com/vYDxyAbqqO

That's a fair argument to make, though I think given that there seem to have been - going by the pictures - a significant (if not representative) number of women preset on Jan 6th, and obviously there are many women veterans, I still favor the general population comparison.

Ideally, we would want to see veterans mounting lawless assaults on democracy at rates significantly lower than the general population. My own view is that it is precisely because of our polarized politics that we have less room for error in the civ-mil relationship.

Two things jump out at me from the GWU report. 1) They stick to arrests, which selects out Ashli Babbitt, who did not live long enough to be arrested. I get why, methodologically, but given the small numbers they're working with, it makes a meaningful difference.

2) the difference in branches of the service, while it could be many factors and correlation != causation, it strikes me that 'warrior-ism' is strongest in the Marines and the Army and those branches were the most represented. Curious, but obviously not dispositive in any way.

Yes, I have some thoughts about why marines are overrepresented, and if *not deploying* plays some role in pushing the desire for action some other way, and it may come out in a future story

I'll look out for it.
