I agree! In many aspects there is room for real improvement and clear alternatives which are better. I was just noting a general principle that when assessing a problem, it is necessary to consider the possibility that the existence of a problem does not imply a solution.

I think the usual tension is that one side thinks all *plausible* alternatives are worse, but the other side disagrees about what's plausible. (And a small but vocal minority disagrees about "worse".)

While I don't disagree, I would add that such situations are often the result of lacking imagination or political will to explore further alternatives. Humans and their societies are suprisingly bad at imagining all alternatives to bad situations.
