Yeah, its pretty bad that in the US a bad letter is still often superficially glowing, save for carefully coded concerns. Solid and superior performance both result in effusive letters. Which really brings things back to the auctoritas of the recommenders.

Also, the article does not mention it, but the process is ripe for quid pro quo abuse. See the recent Princeton Classics Scandal. And still pretty recent Colombia senior Roman historian scandal.
