So this is a nut, basically?
It's a washer, just like modern washers, it keeps the metal components from biting into the frame and distributes the load of the fastener: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Washer_(hardware) … At least that's my understanding, I haven't had a chance to reconstruct artillery.

Ancient catapults are the coolest! This washer is from Bath in the UK, and was probably left as an offering to the goddess Sulis Minerva. Duncan Campbell's done a super Osprey book on Greek and Roman Artillery.
