Do you think the shift away from conscription was a mistake?
I have a longer article actually in process discussing this. I am not fully decided on the question. The AVF has both advantages and disadvantages. I do think that the inherent disadvantages of an AVF were under-explained to the public and continue to be so.
My fear is that an AVF is self selective in a harmful way and that conscription would take a better cross section in most ways but I have no evidence. Just a thought. Look forward to reading your next piece.
