Small numbers are good, viewers can keep track of the action, understand the peril and significance. But Endor makes it work with lots?-v-lotsmore. There are at least 25 Star Destroyers on screen at one point, with distant models used to imply potentially even more.
But because we stay rooted to the situations of a few key characters, whose status we are kept up on (Lando, Wedge, Ackbar) and given a good sense of whose 'winning' via music and quick dialogue, it works while still evoking a huge confusing brawl (which fits with the story).
