15 years ago I was a kid watching Hollywood movies and wondering how much we really know about ancient warfare. Last month, I was asked to give my expert opinion on those movies. I'm glad this video shows how exstatic I was to be doing this.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xPGdOXstSyk …

Also, that might fortress in Two Towers, Helms Deep, would have to be singularly the worst castle design EVER! lol

It needs more ditches (it has one more ditch in the books) but overall the design makes sense for what it is supposed to do. I discuss the operational context that the Helm's Deep fortress complex sits in here:https://acoup.blog/2020/05/01/collections-the-battle-of-helms-deep-part-i-bargaining-for-goods-at-helms-gate/ …

The film does do some odd things with the crenelations (too low), but broadly the design, with a keep supporting a curtain wall drawn over a natural barrier, isn't bad. You see similar citadel+defensive line fortifications fairly often in trace italienne forts.

That it defends a gorge isn't a real problem because, as I discuss, it's main use is probably as a base for raiding - even a small cavalry contingent operating out of the fortress would compel any enemy moving over the westmarch to siege it.

And the designers of the fortress can hardly be faulted for not anticipating the blasting fire the Saruman seems to have only recently invented. Again, the major problems - lack of forward outworks - are resolved in the books, where the complex is more, well, complex.

Leaving as aside defence in depth in the outer curtain wall, you have almost no towers, no ability for enfilading fire. The entrance to the keep has a single door directly on a bridge... I mean the list goes on surely?

Even taking the movie's version, if you look closely there is a round projection from the wall which enables enfilade fire, but the keep itself can also enfilade the Deeping Wall.

Tolkien's sketch of the hornburg as he imagined it has more projecting towers (I count five on the deeping wall) , with the keep projected forward to force enemies to move around the hornburg to attack the wall.

The lack of zig-zag placement on the gate is a design choice, rather than a flaw and it actually makes a fair bit of sense if the goal is to stage lightning cavalry raids out of the Hornburg. Roman forts do not offset gates, for instance. They seemed to work fairly well!

But they do have flanking towers and a fighting gallery above
