That *could* just be an accident of preservation, but it could *also* be that Asclepiodotus is making recommendations out of his ass, because he does that too. Small issue, to be sure, but I am nothing if not nit-picky.
I wouldn't say they're out of his ass. The range of "Macedonian shield" examples (archaeological and representational) could suggest some change over time, or perhaps trend waves, in how deeply concave the "best" shields were.
