I need to buy or make myself an aspis, actually. I end up doing hoplite and sarissa phalanx floor exercises in enough of my courses that I really need to invest in props.

Were there different words for the little shield used by pikemen and the big one used by hoplites?

Just to add on to what @ProfPaul_J said, if you read French there is a good discussion of the ways that scholars have tried to make sense of the shield issue in M. Hatzopoulos, *L'organisation de l'armée macédonienne sous les Antigonides* (2001).

If you read German, then there is a very full discussion of the issue in K. Liampi, *Makedonische Schild* (1998). If you only read English, good options with technical discussions are a lot more limited.

I honestly don't remember how well the topic gets treated in C.A. Matthew, *An Invincible Beast* (2016), but I recall having other issues with Matthews reconstructions, so I *know* I disagreed with N. Sekunda, *The Antigonid army* (2013) on this point.
