Something this @BretDevereaux piece has me thinking about: how post-9/11 security contracting has allowed veterans (esp. former SOF) to continue to practice violence professionally long after ceasing to be soldiers. Lends itself to the “warrior” identity.https://foreignpolicy.com/2021/04/19/united-states-afghanistan-citizen-soldiers-warriors-forever-wars/ …

There’s something about the come-&-go nature of GRS-type contractor gigs that seems especially “warrior”-like to me: the more or less permanent opportunity for a skilled veteran of the wars, if bored with civilian life, to strap on his old gear & reenter them—but without rank etc

My friend tried to make a go of it as a therapist. Got his undergrad his masters and was in his clinical internship when covid shut everything down. No money and the school wouldn’t help him find new hours to intern so he could graduate. He’s now doing PMC work for 4x pay

If veterans feel that their experience better equips them to be LEOs in some way I can't gainsay that, but when it comes to possession of firearms and the context of the tactical engagements they are entering they've basically been anti-trained.
