As an ancient military historian in particular, the fact that Gates of Fire is routinely on service academy reading lists is something I find profoundly frustrating. It's model of ancient battle is so-so and Pressfield's understanding of ancient martial values is frankly bad.
Don't read Gates of Fire. DO read J.E. Lendon, Soldier's & Ghosts. It's non-fiction, but Lendon is a talented writer, it reads easy and smooth and you will actually learn something about ancient martial practice and martial values.
