What I can't stress enough is that this stuff matters. There is, I think, a tendency to dismiss this kind of analysis as just some pencil-necked nonsense. But people pick up on the implications of the language you use, and if the army keeps telling soldiers...

Great piece; I always considered myself a citizen-soldier while serving and was sort of surprised that this attitude or approach wasn’t more common. I didn’t recognize how intentional “warrior culture” was then. Maybe it’s gotten worse over the years

I think it has. I think there's a number of GWOT impacts driving it - focus on SF over regular soldiers in for just one tour, increased physical isolation, but also mental isolation from a public that forgot we were even at war years ago.

This is really good. Also prompts some reflection about how military 'warrior' culture filters down into various strains of 'wannabe' culture. Which I suppose gets filtered back into military culture via recruiting.
