Also, it is very strange to me that LotR or at least FotR is not in the national film registry. Is the NFR limited to just American films? Are they classifying LotR as kiwi (I mean, fair)?
I mean, f***ing Shrek is in the NFR. So is The Dark Knight (fair) and The Matrix (eh, fine). Surely at least FotR ought to be there, if for no other reason than 'kicked off the franchise mega-film plan boom of the 2000s'
It is a little odd - it's certainly a Hollywood production whatever the filming location.
The NFR isn't limited to US films (3 British productions are on it), but the LotR trilogy is a NZ-US co-production, so even so, it would be eligible. Most likely one or all will be added within next few years.
