I suspect an element is the idolization of SF and the elevation of SF officers in the senior hierarchy, as a result of GWOT. These guys don’t just see themselves as superior to civilians, but also to the rest of the military.
This is something I sense but don't feel qualified to speak on myself. It's clear to me that the GWOT has made this problem worse. Partially, I think, because of isolation and long deployments, but also I sense, because of the issue you describe here: the focus on super-elites.

Nichols is probably right that civilian deference is the main problem. But I was always appalled by the amount of SF adoration within the military.
