As a reply guy I can report on the real core of the problem. Getting a like out of an officer or staff sergeant takes careful planning but getting a like out of mid-rank enlisted is like pulling teeth.

"army of venerated Spartans" seems bad but also incorrect. Not to dispute his point, of course.

I feel like the thread overstates the problem somewhat. It's definitely an issue worth considering.
-
What bothers me is the trendline. Signs of a problem have gotten worse and more frequent since 2001. So it's not bad *yet* but it is becoming bad & cultural elements pushing in that direction. Thus, the time for a course correction is now, because institutions turn slow.

very fast take, since vietnam in order to maintain a forever war stance we've moved from an army of soldiers to an army of warriors and neither that stance nor that model are suitable for a liberal democratic society

In the 21st century it looks like wars will be less common and natural disasters will be more common. This pandemic has seen national guard deployment for a public health emergency on an unprecedented scale. Intermittent emergencies naturally lend towards a "health militia"
-
Assuming wars will become less common assumes that there will be a global hegemon, which is an...iffy assumption.

I suspect an element is the idolization of SF and the elevation of SF officers in the senior hierarchy, as a result of GWOT. These guys don’t just see themselves as superior to civilians, but also to the rest of the military.
-
This is something I sense but don't feel qualified to speak on myself. It's clear to me that the GWOT has made this problem worse. Partially, I think, because of isolation and long deployments, but also I sense, because of the issue you describe here: the focus on super-elites.

Out of curiosity about that last point - what do you think has changed to make a volunteer force no longer suitable?
-
Uh, short version: rising internal political tensions, weaknesses in civ-mil relationship, shift back to near-peer deterrence and need for future capacity over present capabilities. Long version...uh, to appear soonish, I hope?
