God I hope you're right and that's what the tankies in all their vile flavors are, because my usual thoughts are... less charitable.
Alas, I knew a number of tankies in college, so they do come at least a bit older. The campus had, as I recall, more than one communist student group, split along cold-war-era ideological divides still (this was, to be clear, in Year-of-our-Lord-two-thousand-and-six).

I remember this because I was in a class on the Russian Revolution with a group of them. As I recall, I think they expected the course to be rather friendlier to the USSR than it was and were rather frustrated by it.
