Part of the problem is in principle senior academics should be able to criticize the ideas of junior scholars that they disagree with. But especially in social media this is hard to do, especially when the junior person is in precarious circumstances. It’s terrible all around.
And I think it goes both ways. Junior academics in precarious positions might be excessively cautious in being critical because of their precarity, especially when precarity often lasts several jobs so you need to string together multiple successful adjunct/fellowship searches.
In those conditions, it is a bad idea to offend anyone with reach and connections.
