And before anyone asks me to write about Battletech on the blog, I can give you the entire post right now: Giant walking battlemechs would not be militarily practical, because cover and concealment are essential and they are very big. Still a fun setting.
So you're saying that if targeting and detection technology improves together with weaponsystems that outperform smaller weapons but don't work at smaller scales, we'll have giant robots with big guns?
Well, one could argue that many weapons don’t perform that well compared to real ones. For example, the ranges are very short for many of them. Of course the point is to make a fun game, and that many Battletech incarnations have succeeded at. (I have played only few games.)
Bitter pill this
Making a fun tabletop game was definitely more important to the designers than accurately simulating future combat. I think there'd be mileage in a blog post on the philosophies of some of the factions though. Kurita & the samurai myth for example.
Just need to hand wave away stand-off weapons systems a-la Gundam and then they sort-of begin to make sense.
Check out Titanfall and Ring of Red for some other interesting (and somewhat more practical) takes on mecha warfare.
Mecha either need to be small enough to take cover, or big enough that they can treat mountains like chest-high walls.
Giant robots are nonsense from the foundation. Thus freed from any constraints of sensibility, they may focus on being awesome.
