You know, there is a lot of twitter bagging on bad (mostly ACW?) generals, like @janecoaston about McClellen or @DrRobThompson about <insert confederate general here>.
But I feel like there is not *nearly* enough bagging on Luigi Cadorna, Italian chief of staff (1914-17).
I may need to write a blog post or twitter thread on it sometime (not right now though, I have too much work to do 
)
Though there is stiff competition, I think Cadorna would be my pick for the most incompetent general of WWI
The problem isn't tactics - everyone's tactics sucked. The problem is the operational level, where you decide to launch 12 offensives at a high operational tempo in the worst terrain in all of Europe instead of going on the defensive or fighting literally *anywhere* else.
I mean most of what I know is drawn from The White War but there's not many guys that both destroy their army in futile campaigning and socio-politically kneecap their country in the way that Cadorna does. It's a hard bar to surpass.
I think the other candidates are probably Samsonov and Rennenkampf (Russia), Conrad von Hotzendorf (Austria) and Ismail Enver Pasha (Ottomans). In terms of morally worst, genocidaire Enver Pasha pretty clearly wins (f*** that guy), but for dumbest - my money is on Cadorna.
That's a tough bracket.
Not *that* tough - lots were competent, but working on a hard problem. No radio, still working out cover-and-movement tactics, no armor or submachine guns: a total slog any way you do it. Cadorna is one of the few whose failures went above and beyond.
Feel like Hötzendorf has gotta get the W here, no? The Carpathian winter offensives have got to be the most horrifically senselessly and bloody incidents of the entire war
I think a strong argument can be made for Hötzendorf and for Enver Pasha. But in some ways, I think Hötzendorf had a complex problem which he messed up catastrophically. Cadorna had a very *simple* problem, for which he chose the worst possible answer.
