yeah but it's interesting that it's happening *now* rather than in, say, the 19th or early 20th century. in part I think because it also needed a breakdown in the idea of transcendent faith
I think that's on to something - it requires an afterlife run by a fallible bureaucracy, rather than an infallibly perfect judge. I'm reminded of Apuleius' spoof in the Golden Ass where he presents the gods as an imperial-style rump Senate.

I think I'll concede the point, because I suddenly remembered that we see one of the earliest kind-of-sort-of-ish examples of this trope in "It's a Wonderful Life" with the somewhat dopey and fallible guardian angel.

So I think what happens is this trope exists on a very limited scale (think IAWL as above, or in "The Screwtape Letters" (albeit with demons instead of angels)). But it doesn't reach its mature form until religion collapses starts its incredible decline post-1970s.
