I only FC for smaller fleets but as far as I can see you’re spot on, using formations makes target calling impossible. I think the only really useful formation is one that lets you take a snapshot of your fleet and maintain the relative positions
Well and, at least, fleets used to run with compositions where everyone ought to have roughly the same optimal (except perhaps a handful of tacklers in fast interceptors or 'dictors) so you want to drop your entire fleet as a tight blob so everyone has the same ideal target.
I suppose 'drop my fleet with everyone 200km off of my target, except for the tackle group which should land at 0km' might work, but that's not exactly a formation, so much as two blobs (and could be achieved in the old system, as I recall)
There is also the use case of interdictors/interceptors on target, mid range ships at their preferred range, anti-tackle 10km behind that and logi 20 km off the main dps ball.
Still fully true, and this doesn’t change the fundamentals that make that anchored blob the best approach. A spread could maybe be good for an all-tackle fleet to blanket a fleet with bubbles or something but the uses sure seem limited
I expect that they are best for a cool trailer-style glamor shot and otherwise good for supercaps to prevent them bumping as they come in, though even they usually cyno directly instead of warping
