I think that particular ad is about the new fleet warping system. You can effectively fleet warp in formations now and arrive at your target spread out. (Although CCP is pretty bad at adverts. The most popular one ever is one that doesn't include any of their content XD)
Huh. When I played, the fleet meta was large groups of sniper-fit battleships with remote-repair and HP tanks. You didn't want to be spread out.
But I assume the meta has changed a fair bit since then, so maybe formations are a big deal? 
I'm a small gang pvper myself so I have no direct experience with big fleet combat, but I think the meta is sniping Heavy Assault Cruisers. (When it's not all supercapitals anyway) I don't know if the feature will end up shaking up the meta.
I only FC for smaller fleets but as far as I can see you’re spot on, using formations makes target calling impossible. I think the only really useful formation is one that lets you take a snapshot of your fleet and maintain the relative positions
Well and, at least, fleets used to run with compositions where everyone ought to have roughly the same optimal (except perhaps a handful of tacklers in fast interceptors or 'dictors) so you want to drop your entire fleet as a tight blob so everyone has the same ideal target.
Bombers will ruin your day if you're bunched up too close.
