So for my lecture today I made a family tree chart to explain the Roman familia and gens and I have to say: Bless the half-dozen students who stuck around after class to hear the long-version answer to, 'what familia is X woman in?' ...
... The short version answer being "it depends" and the long version answer walking through how it depends on if the woman in question was married with or without manus and if her father (not on the chart) was still alive and if this is before or after the Lex Papia Poppaea.

I'm always amused by self-described "conservatives" who get offended when a bride keeps her last name; I think to myself "if you were as traditionalist as you say, your daughter wouldn't even have her own FIRST name!"
In other words: - norms change; deal with it - the Good Old Days actually sucked; let's not go back there, mmmkay?
