Right. And a large department *might* have two. But you almost never see clusters the way you will with other subfields in history.

in my diss days there were ancient historians in classics (at least 2) and one in history (he didnt get along with the classics folks or something) it was strange for grad supervision too

Interesting. Wonder if that's just different schools, or a sign of the times? Every program I've been at had 1 or 2 ancient historians, never more and always in either history or classics, never both.
