It just occurred to me that AI could actually be really useful for papyrology: an epistemological blunt instrument that can pick out a disproportionately 'interesting' subset of papyri fragments would be really useful! Any good sources on hand re computer-assisted papyrology?

We're almost certainly *not* at the point where an AI could outdo humans on most important tasks, but simply being able to crudely guess at what stuff should be looked at first is REALLY USEFUL when you have a massive manpower shortage like papyrologists do.

Serious question: Is the sword there because the only way for serious historians to maintain tenured employment is through a highlanderesque “there can only be one” blood duel on college campuses?
