(Apologies for the language, but the frequency with which mostly - not exclusively, but mostly - non-'Western' monuments get attributed to aliens because people can't believe the Egyptians/Maya/Khmer/etc/etc built them makes me honestly angry. Lots of people built cool things!)

I'm not sure that it's just non-European monuments - you get the same thing about megaliths. If it's not Aliens, it's Merlin flying them around like zeppelins. People want mystery and genuinely find it hard to believe that people built these structures without modern machines.

I was rather amused when I looked up "Cyclopean" architecture and discovered that it was the ancient Greeks shrugging at local megalithic architecture and saying, "Must have been giants!"

Trying to think of Western monuments people say we're built by aliens, and the closest I can think of is Geoffrey of Monmouth saying Merlin did Stonehenge. Generously, maybe the history about when/how/etc European monuments were built is more clear/accessible. But...
