lost opportunities and the immense tension of schooling/career pressure put on them I think - that feeling that your life is going to be determined by your actions at 16, which previous generations did not have.
I certainly get the sense that many of my students have this sometimes-panicked sense that they need to achieve at a very high level to stay afloat, which often manifests in self-defeating or at least educationally counterproductive ways.

Alas, of course, they also seem to be fundamentally correct about the baseline assumptions about the winner-take-all nature of job and economic competition these days.

weirdly I think this is actually *less* the case in the job market (outside the over-represented-in-media jobs, like, uh, media and academia) and more the case with education
