You know, I'm reading a lot of concerns about COVID-related learning loss at the grade school level...and it just seems to me that the obvious thing to do would be to use ARP-state money to extend the school year over the summer. Is that not on the table? Honest question.

And it feels like this would be pretty popular, given how the polling on opening schools has shifted over the last month. Again, hard on teachers, but many burdens can be made to feel lighter with money.

Fwiw, I'm a K-12 educator and I haven't heard of it as seriously discussed anywhere. "Millions for defense, not one cent for tribute!" Except replace "defense" with "consultants, contractors, and plexiglass shields" and "tribute" with "more pay for more teachers."

There's actually data that year-round school would be good policy generally (I've heard a week off every 6-8 + all of August, so maybe even less school total). But then you WOULD have to pay teachers more, and have less terrible buildings with real HVAC.

Only problem is a lot of schools are older and not air conditioned. Kids are already barely doing anything if it's hot in June in those schools, disproportionately older/poorer areas. So yes they should, but we should have modest expectations.
